ONLINE EXHIBITION: MENACING BEAUTY, 1 May to 31 July 2023
A collaborative Exhibition by Dhama Thanigasapapathy and Sonia Boening
The earth is a vast and mysterious place – a place of great beauty and of menace.
As humans become increasingly concerned about climate change, we sense nature encroaching on civilisation, seas submerging land, wind and rain and seas destroying, eroding, immersing and subsuming. Land becomes flooded or parched in a maelstrom of extremes. Oceans turn from glassy calm to thundering wilds. Glaciers melt and sea levels rise. Pollution, overfishing and rising acidity are now taking a toll on the delicate ecosystem, threatening survival.
Amongst the obliteration there is also a sublime allure. The interplay of light, water and atmosphere creates a mesmerising array of colours and reflections. Dark secret spaces intrigue and lurid colours rendered deliberately unnaturally provide a compelling luminous attraction. There is a tension between celebrating the awesome beauty of a powerful nature marred and the reality of the damage that is wrought.
